Lowrey New Zealand Butter Cookies

When it comes to simple indulgences, nothing beats a good butter cookie. Recently, I had the pleasure of trying a selection of Lowrey Butter Cookies from New Zealand. I sampled 3 flavours – Original, Matcha and Black Sesame Seed. Made with pure, organic New Zealand butter and just a few all-natural ingredients, these handcrafted cookies offered a wonderful tasting experience.

Packaging and Presentation

The cookies arrived in beautiful tins that were well-protected with bubble wrap. Given how delicate these cookies are, and the fact that they were shipped halfway across the world, I was pleasantly surprised that they all remained intact, save for a couple of black sesame cookies.

Taste & Texture

All 3 flavours are bold and natural – there are no artificial flavourings. Every mouthful is filled with buttery decadence, and there’s no “eggy” taste, which can be the case with some butter cookies. In fact, all the cookies are egg-free, so they’re suitable for lacto-vegetarians or anyone with an egg allergy.

Original Butter Cookies

These cookies deliver everything you’d expect from a classic butter cookie: rich, buttery and crumbly, with just the right amount of sweetness. They are luxuriously creamy, delectably tender, velvety-smooth, and the freshness is undeniable. They truly capture the essence of high-quality New Zealand butter. If you’re a fan of traditional butter cookies, these timeless treats will not disappoint – they’re buttery perfection.

Matcha Butter Cookies

The matcha cookies are a real standout. They pack a strong matcha punch with the perfect balance of sweetness and ever-so-subtle hint of bitterness. The distinctive grassy-sweet, vegetal taste of quality matcha is front and centre, complemented by the cookies’ luscious buttery texture. Even the deep green hue of the cookies is a testament to their matcha intensity. Full-flavoured and earthy, matcha puts a creative spin on the humble butter cookie.

Black Sesame Seed Butter Cookies

I was delighted with the bold, robust flavour of these black sesame cookies. Nutty, savoury, smoky and mildly sweet, the deep flavour profile of toasted black sesame seeds is unmistakable in every bite. The cookies are made from ground black sesame seeds, with additional whole sesame seeds mixed in for a slight crunch. They reminded me of traditional Asian black sesame cookies, but softer and less dry. These cookies are a tad lighter in consistency and more airy than the other 2 flavours. They’re also the most delicate and crumbly, which means that it’s best to pop the whole cookie into your mouth (not necessarily a bad thing!) rather than nibbling on it.

Overall Experience

The cookies are decadently soft and melt-in-your-mouth. They aren’t overly sweet, which means that the butter and natural flavours can really shine without being overpowered by sugar. They’re reminiscent of the wholesome, freshly baked homemade cookies that your grandmother would’ve made. The handmade quality – the cookies are not perfectly identical machine-piped swirls – adds to their charm.

There are a couple of things to note or keep in mind. It does take a little effort to open up the cookie tin, since it’s tightly sealed to preserve freshness and prevent breakage during transit. However, this attention to packaging ensures that your cookies arrive in perfect condition. As these cookies are delicate, they’re best enjoyed at home rather than on the go. Pairing them with a cup of tea or coffee makes for a wonderfully indulgent treat.

Verdict

These cookies exceeded my expectations. I was genuinely impressed with their taste and texture. The original cookies are hands down the most buttery cookies I’ve ever tasted, and have become a new favourite of mine. At the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed the unique Asian-inspired cookie flavours. As a home baker who loves adding an Asian twist to Western desserts, the matcha and black sesame-infused butter cookies are right up my alley.

I would highly recommend Lowrey Butter Cookies to anyone who appreciates a good butter cookie. In fact, I brought some to work and a couple of my colleagues loved them so much they were asking how they could get their hands on some!

The cookies come well-packaged in elegant tins that would make great gifts, especially with Christmas just around the corner! To see the whole range of products, check out https://lowreyfoods.com/. They now ship worldwide.
